30DMC - day 12
Today’s theme is map not made with GIS software, and it got me thinking a little outside the box about ‘maps’.
I studied mathematics at university, and we often refer to a function as a ‘map’.1
So for my non-GIS map I decided to pull out a function that I used in my dissertation - a helpful little function called a mollifier:
Mollifiers act in a pretty cool way to approximate functions via convolution, and were a helpful tool in my proof of Brouwer’s fixed point theorem.

Sometimes ‘mapping’ is used in a more general context to invoke the ‘idea’ of a function transforming an input into an output, but a mapping might not technically be a ‘function’. ↩︎
